Qatar may start buying Russian wheat amid growth of grain prices

DOHA, Mar 14 (PRIME) -- Qatar may restart purchases of wheat from Russia due to the growth of international prices for grain on the back of the conflict in Ukraine, Masoud Al-Marri, director of the food security department of the Municipality and Environment Ministry of Qatar, told PRIME on March 12.

“Prices and demand for wheat are rising due to the crisis in Ukraine and reduction of exports of agricultural products from the country, and the price for Russia’s wheat may become attractive in these conditions for the company that conducts procurements for Qatar,” he said.

The government of Qatar allowed private companies to choose the countries that supply agricultural products to Qatar, this is why the previous decision to suspend purchases from Russia could have been done due to economic reasons, he said.

Qatar has enough wheat stock to last six months, and it has time to evaluate the situation, he said.
